A pilot study published this week in the Archives of Neurology suggests that mild electrical stimulation of target memory regions of the brain appears to increase neuronal activity. One year of deep brain stimulation increased brain metabolism and was associated with better outcomes in cognition, memory and quality of life.

Functional Neuromodulation has received approval from the FDA to conduct a study on the use of deep brain stimulation for patients with mild Alzheimer’s Disease. The study plan is currently under review. Once the study plan is approved and the researchers are prepared, then patients will begin to be screened to see if they are eligible for this clinical study.
